Trouble starting a newly tuned CA72.

Post by deafanddiabetic » Fri Jun 20, 2014 4:32 pm

Hey everybody, just brought home a '66 CA72. Was just running last year and got parked, it was clean as a whistle inside and someone clearly took good care of the mainteance.

I put new plugs in, set the point to .35mm and corrected the advancement, set all the valves to .004 inches, set the float height to 26.5mm, blew out all the jet passages and turned (what I think is) the air screw to 1 and 1/4 out. Fresh oil in, brand new battery, all the lights work, the starter works, and she should be good to go.

I'm getting fuel into the carb just fine but whether I kick her or push button I cannot for the life of me get it to fire.

I've gotten it to hiccup and pop a few times, even had it aaaaalmost start and run, but each time no luck. Any suggestions? The plugs smell lightly of gasoline, I've got fuel flow, awesome blue fat spark on both plugs, etc.

Thanks!

Did you set the static timing for the points to open at "F" mark on the rotor?

I'd used the buzzer feature on my circuit tester, but I'll rig up a bulb alligator test tonight. Thanks for the suggestion!

If the bike was running last year and you messed with the timing by moving the points plate much you might have put it enough out of time it won't start. Just a possibility.

Any insight into which screw is the air screw and throttle screw? Reading around this forum I heard that there's an error in the User Manual or something to that effect. Usually air is controlled by the screw closest to the intake, but I'm confused on differing answers around this forum.

The air screw is closest to the head and is angled up. The slide screw is horizontal and centered to the slide.

That was exactly it. Thanks for the help, Tom. She runs rough right now but it least it's starting up! One plug side is fouling, but that just means some carb tuning, probably.
