Centrifugal oil filter question

There is a great deal of racket from the chaincase of my recently rebuilt 1965 CL77 engine. Upon opening the chaincase, I find that the centrifugal oil filter with its sprocket and chain are free to rotate when nothing else is moving. Did I assemble something improperly? The other possibility is the primary chain, which has a tensioner with a new rubber wheel, but the upper portion of the chain still has a fair amount of free play. I'm attempting to locate a supplier for a new primary chain.

Something must be up with the sprocket on the crank!

My oil filter definitely does not move independently from the main sprocket. Must be an assembly issue.

On my CB72 I had the same problem last autumn. I then thightened down the locking nut and secured it with locking washer. Filter was then OK. Now when changing oil and checking filter, I find the filter in exactly the same state; it can move almost freely. What's happening??

Unless the sprocket on the filter is loose then the locking nut must not be tight enough.That would be the only expalanation.Joe

Refer to the parts illustration. Washer #10 is a cone shaped washer. The high center should be installed away from the engine. When the nut is tightened, the washer clamps down on the oil filter drive sprocket.

OK, that makes sense. Will check and revert regarding the positon of my washer. In late September, as I am on the road now....
