unusual noise

I acquired a 67 CL-77 that it appears the engine and case have been apart. I was kicking the engine over in neutral, clutch in, ignition off, and hear noise like maybe the tappets are hitting the valve covers, took the covers off no difference. I checked tappet clearance, seems ok. released cam chain tensioner, and still get the noise . Any ideas? otis

Given the engine has been apart, do the tappets align centrally with the valves? It is possible that the cam follower is clipping the other cam lobe if not put back together correctly.

I would try turning the engine over very slow using a wrench on the alternator bolt. See if the tapping is once every revolution, once every 2 revolutions, or whatever. See if you can find some sort of pattern and that might narrow it down.

thank you both Waveblaster & Hahnda fdor your ideas. the tappets are lined up ok, when I turn engine using the stator bolt I don' hear any noise. i'm still stumped

Reading your first post again I have a question. When you say "clutch in" does that mean you are holding the clutch lever in? If you are, the engine actually shouldn't even be turning over when you kick it.

yep, that's what I thought too. that's how I noticed the noise, the clutch seemed to be a little sticky so I was just kicking it in neutral trying to get the engine not to turn with the clutch pulled in.
