Thanks for the info.
I wonder why Honda didn't fit the gear with a spline it seems a bit of a strange idea to me.
I just thought it might be some kind of safety device designed to slip if the filter became blocked. And if the nut is tight it shouldn't t need a tab washer. When I took the nut off it was tabbed over but wasn't tight.
I will dog it up.

It's just a centrifugal filter, heavy debris is thrown outwards and the oil just passes through under low pressure, there is no way of the engine sensing if the filter is blocked.

That's my point.
The filter is there is collect (heavy debris) and its spinning. If somehow it becomes so blocked it cant spin or jambs something has to give. If the sprocket is tightened up and cant slip its going to break the chain or strip the sprocket, that's my thinking anyway.
In my experience the designers of engines are very clever and don't design something like this for nothing. It would have been easier to have a spline on the inside of the drive sprocket and a hexagon nut. Why go to the trouble of making a special nut with a tab washer and a special cone washer. It makes no sense. But then again I could be wrong.

It doesn't matter how clogged the filter gets, there's nothing to stop it spinning. It will just stop oil getting to the engine as it blocks up. It's just a rotating cylinder.

Did you say you have a barrel with pistons. I need either a std piston and two sets of rings or the barrel. Please email the photos.

I have rebuilt the engine and refitted it. fitted new battery etc.
It started first touch and runs fine.
My problem is when the starter is cranking there is an intermittent metallic bang ( a really scary one) The first time I herd it I thought it had dropped a valve its that bad, but the engine runs fine. It only dose it when the engine is cranking. Although the chain dosnt appear to be worn at all its very slack and I think its either slapping something or its trying to jump off the engine sprocket. but there is no adjustment for the chain. Do I shim the starter back?
