Somewhere here I have a set of those pipes, very rusty, kept them for pattern purposes only. As I recall the guards were very different and I' not even sure I kept them. I'll look around when I get some time. Can't say for sure if they were custom made or not and finding them if factory made, can you say "needle in a haystack" ; )adangvu1972 wrote:Also, you mention the Webco pipes, I was looking for what type of pipes they were and particularly the heat shields, as one of the heat shield is bent and was wondering if they are custom made or if I can get a replacement. Would you know?

yes that looks just like my frame. I guess it's a '61 CB72 frame with a '62 CB77 engine. Your bike looks like it's gonna be a beauty once it's all put back together! It's soo cleaned up :) Sixtiescycle: I total get it's probably a needle in a haystack situation in figuring out the heat shield. Thanks for helping me at least figure out what it was :) Waveblaster: So I went on a 25minute ride today around the neighborhood and other than the idle running high in neutral by the end of the ride (3500rpm, started at 1500rpm), I didn't experience the problem with the bike dying. Although this time, I didn't have the headlight on at all. I'm suspecting it may be an issue of the old rectifier draining the battery. Also, I noticed that after I warmed up the engine, the electric ignition started up with no problems (again, no headlight was on). I tried multiple times and it started right up. Also when I pulled the seat, I noticed the rectifier look original so I'm thinking that this was the problem (at least I'm hoping it's a simple thing like that). I'm gonna get it replaced and maybe look at other electrical updates. Last thing, now that I know that the frame is a '61 and engine is a '62, what year/type would I put the title in? a 1961 CB72 or a 1962 CB77?

Thanks for your suggestion. Frame/Vin it is :) Also thanks to everyone for helping me figure out all my questions! This is an amazing and supportive forum. I just ordered the 2 books in the marketplace so I can start getting my hands dirty and get a good knowledge of my motorcycle and knowing that this forum is available to help is such a relief!
more correct engineI have engine case number CB72 112715 available if you ever decide to have a more correct match. PM me if you do.

I too live in California, and I had to take my bike to CHP to have the VIN "verified". The bike was originally registered in New York, ages ago, before NY issued titles for motorcycles. New York stated that the "registration is the title", but California wasn't having that. Anyway, DMV had me take the Old Girl to a CHP office that has a verification officer. That person researched the frame number and engine number, concluded it was an "early 1966" (it's a 1965), determined it wasn't stolen (that was the big concern), and gave me paperwork to take to DMV. DMV issued a title and registration. Pretty simple, but it took a long time to get it done!
