CB77 Kickstart Spindle Part Numbers
CB77 Kickstart Spindle Part NumbersI have a 1965 Honda CB77 which I think, from reading previous posts, is showing the symptoms of a damaged kickstart spindle. The splines are distorted due to over torque and the kickstart lever is dropping down and recovering to the original position when the bike is accelerating or decelerating. I understand that this can happen if the spindle shaft ground roller bearing surfaces are worn or the shaft is bent.
Looking at the parts manual, the correct part number for my 6 digit engine number is 28251-259-000. However this part is not available now and is "superseded" by 28250-259-000. Does anybody know the physical difference between the part numbers? Has anyone experience of replacing with the 28250-259-000 part. The reason I ask is to ensure to get the right part especially as the new part is very expensive. Any guidance from the community would be very welcome. Regards

thanks for the link to Bill Silver's article which I had not seen. These articles are always interesting reading. It certainly seems to confirm that the kickstart spindle is the source off problem on my bike. Also rather encouraging that the strip and rebuild can be done in six hours! That's experience for you. He does not mention the change in part number, in fact, saying that the same part was used on almost 250,000 engines. Hopefully someone can clarify that question. Thanks again Regards The other little part that can fail is the kickstart spindel PAWL and PIN nasty little buggers and just as hard to find as the spindle.
One of the lovely little wonders of Honda is in these models at least Honda changed parts or should I say updated with out telling any one even there own printers of the parts books. Dreams they are and nightmares as well some times, you need deep pockets and a strong will to live to own a early Honda. But I love em.
That number change is at the same engine as all the splines and gears were changed to the more shallow spline depth.
I've taken several of those engines apart and can see the difference with the shafts and gears but never noticed any actual difference with the KS. ........lm

Thank you very much from the replies which are very helpful. I gather that the pawl and pin are very likely to need to be replaced as well the spindle. I agree with you SBMH that you need a strong will. I have just done a top end overhaul and found the cams had been butchered by a previous rebuilder. That's fixed, now this lastest problem. Still, I look forward to the day soon when it will ride just like the CB72 I owned and enjoyed in 1968! LM, the info on the spindle part no. is the answer I was looking for. When parts are shown in listings as 'superseded by' it is never clear whether in fact they are interchangeable. Your practical experience is invaluable to this community. Thanks again. Regards
