my ca77 has only 1100 miles on the motor. i got it started with no problem but only stays running for a few mins then it dies. i rebuilt the carb, saw the float was rubbing on the side of the float bowl. fixed it. now the brand new battery is dead only after fussing with the bike 20 mins. when it runs it stays on without the battery connected so i think the stator is ok. but there is something majorly draining the battery dead even when the bike off while key is on.... no its not the lights ... i turned them off at the handlebar switch .... maybe rectifier???? how do i test it?
it may be 2 different problems ... the bike sat for 20 years in an airplane hanger.
is there something else that on the carb thats flooding the motor ??? would dirty connections around the rectifier cause issues?
im located in the lehigh valley pa, maybe a local can help me..... ??
any suggestions would be great
rectifier test?
With the key on there is likely draw through the coil (when the points are closed) and that could drain the battery.
Most likely the rectifier is the original selenium rectifier. They are a common problem area and, IMHO, should be replaced with a modern silicon rectifier. A reproduction with silicon diodes is available. If you do a search you can find other options as well. An ammeter between the battery terminal on the rectifier and the wire that's attached to it should tell you if that's the problem.
For the engine dying, pull the gas cap and see if that helps, sometimes the vent in the cap gets plugged, starving the engine for fuel after a short time.

I recharged the battery and tried again last night to get the motor running. nothing at all. there is fuel in the float bowl, there is spark on the plugs ( pulled them out and touched them to the block and saw arched sparks on both plugs while running the starter )
still the cylinders have too much fuel and the engine floods after a minute or two of having the engine turn over
would the floats still be the culprit ?? they seem to easily move up and down when the bowl is pulled off .....
any other suggestions?

yep i rebuilt it with all new jets. whats weird is that it ran nicely for five mins then it quit. im pulling the carb all apart this weekend and cleaning it up again i guess. it was like a caramel candy apple in there when i first pulled it apart. it took a week to soak it so i could even get it apart.
i have a second needle set i can put in and see if that does anything
