Timing chain marks

Which reference do I use for 12 o'clock position on the cam, and is the crank supposed to be on T or F?

Is it 12 o'clock using a level floor as a reference, or 12 o'clock using valve cover mating surface as a reference.

Crank is at T . Use flat machined top of the head as your "level". Slash on the points cam is at 12 o'clock (pointing up) and the "0" on the cam sprocket is at 12 o'clock also with the top flat plane of the cam sprocket level with the top of the head.

New to the forum, so please bear with me.

Recently picked up a CL77 project bike and after running a leak down test on it, it appears that the RH cylinder has a bent/damaged intake valve. Before I pull the engine, just want to check the correctness of the present cam timing so I can put it back together correctly. From the way the cam cover screws are buggered up, it appears that some PO has been in the engine before.

With the flywheel on the “T” for the RH cylinder, the hash mark on the end of the points cam is facing straight up, i.e., 12:00. Is that correct? If it is, what is the hash reference mark on the end cam cover for?

The mark can be seen in the accompanying images.

And finally, just in case I’m not lucky and have an endless cam chain so that I must split the cam to get the head off, when looking at the points side of the cam, do you turn the cam nut CCW, or CW to loosen it?

The mark you are looking for is actually on the cam sprocket. It looks like an "0". You have to remove the top cover to see it.

Appreciate it. Assume the "0" shown in the below link is what you're talking about. If the flywheel is sitting on the "T" mark, in you're experience, is the timing of the cam off (retatded) by one tooth?

Seriously?

2? 3?

Whomever put this thing together previously did not align the master link with the "0", but the actual cam mark only looks to be about one (1) tooth off.
