Many thanks G. As I say, I'm hoping that the leak proves to be as a result of the lack of a decent gasket, so once I've fitted a replacement I'll be better able to decide whether or not I need to remove the cable attachment plate. If it does need removing I'll get back to you for a bit of expert guidance. Meanwhile, hope springs eternal, as they say.

I have had a look at the cable on my CB77 and I see there is a small red sealing washer on the cable inner. See photo below.

I think my leak was coming from the interface between the knurled nut and the tacho drive bearing. I have fitted a thin fibre washer between the interface and it seems to have sured the leak on a 30 mile ride today.

Perhaps not the origial configuration but it does seem to have done the job to fix the oil leak.
