Third gear skiping
Third gear skiping
Just finished a resto '67 CL77. It does not fully engage third gear and "skips" (tries to engage) so I just go to fourth. Is the most likely problem the Gear Cotters? Wish I knew about this forum when I was deep into the resto. Carl

Re: Third gear skiping
Hello Carl. It can be one or two gears that are bad. You will probably have to split the engine to find out. It's not necessary to remove the cylinders and head tp get to the gears. I remove the bottom case and the gears are right there. You may want to look at the shift forks and shift drum rollers also. .........................lm

Re: Third gear skiping
Thanks, LM. I inspected all the transmission internals during complete teardown while in resto process. Saw no serious looking wear, but I did replace the shift drum. The previous owner had warned me about the skipping. I will soon break it open again for even closer inspection.LOUD MOUSE wrote:Hello Carl. It can be one or two gears that are bad.
