CA77 15t front sprocket, different countershaft 16t???

Post by spoon55432 » Mon Aug 28, 2017 7:48 pm

I have an old '64 Dream; while replacing the chain I fed it into the case and it was binding. Got off the right cover, someone stuck a 15t 530 sprocket on the countershaft, too wide for 525 chain. I guess that's why the chain was so worn. So I took another sprocket off a CA77 parts engine, and it was 16t; great - I could use to gear up a bit. But it won't fit on my countershaft! Splines are the same height but are cut deeper on the parts motor, and the 16t sprocket fits down into the cuts. My Dream has shallow spline cuts and the 15t sprocket is a match for those. WTF??

Parts engine: CA77E - 100055
My engine:CA77E - 101983

Anyone know anything about this?

Randy is quite correct - Honda changed most of their splines from 'deep' to 'shallow' at some point during production.

I have two NEW (shallow spline) sprockets - 16 tooth if that will help - Honda #23801-266-010

The shallow spline sprockets fit all bikes - the deep spline sprocket will not fit later models.

I will sell them for $25 each

I bought 5 new sprockets from Australia several years age while working on a 1965 Dream. I still have two left. If they were available at a dealer they are about $75
