Dream transmission ratios

Post by conbs » Tue May 22, 2012 5:47 pm

G, as I said at the beginning of this thread: I am not a transmission guy.

But, it is my understanding that the ratios from the Shop Manual are indeed those from the transmission. In 4th the ratio is 1.00. The input rpm at the clutch is the same as the output rpm at the drive sprocket because the main shaft is locked together. Have I got that wrong? Perhaps it doesn't matter as I think you have captured my real quest per the below.

I agree with you that no numbers or charts can tell you how a bike will feel on the road. That said, I do know what 1st feels like on my Dream and I like it alot. Quick off the line. I know what 4th feels like and have no desire (and probably no realistic way) to change that. My idea is that making the "space" between 1st to 2nd; 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th more even will make for a better riding experience. Your idea of using Superhawk gear sets in a Dream seem to get at that based on your chart.

I am very interested to know how you come out with that. It seems to me that since the centerlines for the main and countershafts are the same distance apart, the gears from the Superhawk should fit in the Dream. I look forward to your results. Thanks for your effort on this.

Bill

You are absolutely right!

I was just looking at the gear pairs in isolation, reading the descriptions from the parts book. As you correctly point out, all of the lower gears 'see' the extra ratio between countershaft and mainshaft.

4th just locks the clutch direct to the output sprocket on the mainshaft, giving a 1:1 ratio. I'll modify my chart when I get a moment.

Regards

Xing CB gears in a CA

Post by conbs » Fri May 25, 2012 4:24 pm

G, I looked in the CA, CB and CL parts manuals. I don't have a CB so I never looked before, but the CB and CL transmissions have the same gearing.

Gear sets are:CB - 2nd 24/27; 3rd 29/23 CA - 2nd 23/28; 3rd 27/24. If I have this wrong I hope someone will straighten me out.

So, if you X CB gears in a CA you get 23/29 instead of 23/28 in 2nd and the same 27/24 in 3rd. "Much of muchness" I think you said.

If you X a CA transmission you get 24/27 vs 23/28 in 2nd and 28/23 vs 27/24 in 3rd. Not an enormous change, but perhaps interesting. It is apparently also the only option, unless someone knows of a tranny from another bike that: 1) uses the same size main and counter shafts, 2) that are set the same distance apart in the cases as a 305, and 3) has different gear set that will be desirable. Those gear sets would "drop in". If I understand correctly from Jerry, that animal does not exist.

So.......it is the same old question: To X or not to X a CA?

Conbs

Here is an updated (corrected) version of my chart, slightly rearranged to make it easier to see the effect of X-ing the gears. It shows that you gain nothing at all by X-ing the Dream gears.
