Great progress, Graham!
You know, the original air filters on my bike had the power jet connections (now that I know what they are). I think I tossed them, though - they were so disintegrated. I'll look see and let you know.

I have what you show in the picture.
Two 6mm long 4mm bolts go through into the metal part of the foam rubber ring around the speedo.
My speedo is not attached to the foam rubber, so the tach and speedo cables push it up when the handlebars are turned.
Is that rubber ring originally attached to the speedo with adhesive?

Depends which year your bike is. On post '63 Bikes there are two screws in the headlamp bucket which screw into two tapped holes in just below the speedo bezel.

Yes the speedo is bonded to the rubber.
Here's a replacement if yours is perished.

Thanks.
Mine is actually in reasonably good condition, but no longer bonded.
First I will try and re-glue it.
Perhaps 3M weatherstrip adhesive.

I would be interested to know how that turns out.

There is a guy in UK VJMC who rebuilds them with new elements. If you still have them I would happily buy them from you.
