Shifter sticks in first

Post by FLYHAVEN2001 » Wed Aug 03, 2005 8:09 pm

My shifter sticks in first gear usually just when I am going for the first ride of the day or if I stop and let it sit it may do this. Also, noticed if I would just very gently put it in first gear on my first ride of the day it would not do this or it would not stick as bad. I had pulled the sidecover to look at shift drum and levers but did not see anything wrong. I was wondering if the shift arm with the roller that goes in the detents could travel to far past the detent for first gear? I was told it may internal gear problem, but what else would cause the shifter to feel rock hard and not move at all. Revving engine seems to be the only way to get it to shift then when it is stuck. I might get it to stick then pull side cover off again to see where the cam roll is. This would tell me if it traveling to far and I will replace my clutch disks too while it's off. thanks

FLY, I think your on the right track. The shift drum and rollers are critical to the smooth operation of the trans. That is where I'd look. (I know this because that is what happened to mine!) Good Luck, Steve Greer

What exactly was the problem you had and what did you do to fix it.

Fly, I removed the engine and gave it to a friend that works on these as a hobby(races them too). He did the tear down and inspection for me. Found worn shift rollers and some worn gears,2nd and 3rd.In talking to "THE GURU" Ed Moore he told me how these babies act with worn shift rollers and drum. Your description sounds like his description. I got lucky and found a used shift drum and rollers that were in good shape (on e-bay) and bought the rest of the parts from Ed and Ohio cycle. It's being put back together now. I'm looking foward to riding yet this summer. Just a note, There is alot of tear down to do these. So be ready. Good Luck!!! Steve Greer P.S. mabey talking to Ed might be a good idea for you. emo@ktc.com
Hello,
I too have a CL77 that sticks and gets stuck when attempting to shift into 1st or 2nd. I tore the engine down and the only thing obvious me is a worn shifting fork. There are circular rub marks from the gear. Would this cause the symptoms I described? I don't see any obvious wear on the spring loaded detent roller. Any advise is welcome and appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeff

JK, Welcome to the forum. The shift drum and rollers in the shift forks are likly the problem, any wear at all is going to be a problem. That is the problem with my CB any way. I talked with Emo at length about it and he was very informative,I would recomend you do the same.EMO@ktc.com
I believe he will help you. Good Luck, Steve Greer
