Differences between a CA72 & CA77??

Post by wombat200 » Sun Mar 19, 2006 6:14 am

Apart from the bigger bore, what are the main differences? I know that the early tanks were different to the later tanks, but is there much else? Are brake & wheel/tyre sizes different? Any info much appreciated!! Thanks!!

Also, is it possible to bore the 250cc to suit the 305cc pistons, or failing that, can the 305cc barrles fit straight onto the 250cc bottom end??

I just tore down a 250cc dream last night. It had only 6000 miles on it I believe. Do you need top end parts? joe

The bikes are pretty much the same.
The engine is the difference.
Head has a smaller dome.
Cylinders will not safely bore to 305.
305 cylinders will NOT fit engine top case until lots of machine work to enlarge the holes for the sleeeves. .........lm

I've got the option to buy a CA72 (I'm in Australia) & always liked the shape, I guess I was wondering how easy it would have been to put a 305 top end on, but apparently it's not a simple bolt-on.

These bikes are pretty rare down here & seem rare in the US too? Were mostly 305s sold??

I may well need top end parts - the one I'm considering is siezed, most likely stuck on the rings..... Are pistons & rings, top end rebuild stuff etc, all easy to come by??

In my opinion a 250 should remain a 250 cause there are fewer of them than the 305. Pistons and rings are readly avilable and not expensive. ..........lm

Yes, It seems the 250's are harder to come by.......

Being in Australia, parts are not that easy to come by. I notice alot of you guys use Ohio Cycles?? or similar? Unfortunately, he will not ship to Australia..... Obviously, I just need to be careful I don't get stuck with something that's un-restoreable.....

The bike I'm looking at came from the States just recently, after spending 20years+ sitting outside in Pennsylvania somewhere...... Very rusty, but only surface rust.
