I screwed the air screw out more than 3 turns.....
and the popping stopped. awesome. adjusted the idle and all was smooth. after the motor heated up a bit was back to popping but not as bad...carbs are really almost synced well.
Maybe an indication that I need to put new kits in the carbs?
anyway, I think I can get it just about right next try.
so thanks for that LM

I have a question to someone who has done proper tappet adjustments. would you mind saying what the proper procedure is?
On a cold motor I get the right side at tdc, and adjust. then I rotate to tdc on the left, one full revolution plus a half? you see. when at tdc (compression stroke) on the right, and after the adjustment, the valves sink further into the motor half way between left tdc. If I understand Clymers correctly is says at tdc the valves should be all the way in.
Where am I wrong here, I've done it 3 times...no good.
pretty confused between the two books, Silvers and the sometimes conflicting clymers
Thx much

On the left in the yellow band you will see the FAQ list. Look at the How I Tune My Engine and you will find you are not adjusting the cams correctly. .............lm
