What's the best for cleaning rust out of tank?

Post by GG » Fri Nov 05, 2010 1:38 pm

I am going to seal my gas tank with a good sealer. What is the best rust remover? Some of the common rust removers have muriatic acid and I think phosphoric acid. Any suggestions? I live in Costa Rica, so I will not have the same brand names as the US. So if you can help me with the chemical itself, this will help. Thanks!

Take a look at electrolytic de-rusting. Works quite well with tanks if you can get the electrode shielded properly from touching the sides.

I've seen good reviews for this, but haven't tried it myself yet.

I ended up taking mine to a local radiator shop, and they charged me $35.00....well worth it for me, but it did remove all the paint also.

Tank cleaning

Okay guys - thanks for the tip. Sounds a bit scary, and I don't know what "washing soda" translates to in Spanish. I'll give it a try! GG

I picked up a gallon of the Harbor Freight Evapo Rust that I'm going to try this weekend. I only have very light rust inside, but while I'm waiting for my parts to arrive I thought I'd give it a cleaning. I'm going to 1st wash it soapy water and shake around a short length of chain to break up any crud on the bottom of the tank. Then let the Evapo Rust soak for a few days. I'll let you know how it works.

GG Where in Costa Rica are you living???? About 10 yrs ago I spent a summer there just lounging and drinkin' Imperials!!! Ahhhhh.... Pura Vida!!!
