Hi Ron - Opinions here are to just leave those out. I've had clutches with and without them and couldn't tell a difference. I think good clean straight plates, proper adjustment, and the right oil is the most important. What's the right oil you ask? Well here goes... I use 30W from Walmart and change it every 1000 miles.

Hey Ron one more thing if you're going to leave that ring in there. That first metal plate came in a thin and later a thick version and the fiber ones come in different thicknesses too so the holes for those wires are only in the right place for the plates that came with that clutch from the factory. That can be hard to determine and there's lots of posts about it if you search this site. LM rebuilds a lot of these and may have more/better info.
