Winker Switch Dilemma

Post by Seadog » Sun Feb 19, 2017 10:41 am

I purchased the winker/starter switch, pic below, a few weeks ago, but am having a bit of a hard time installing it. The first problem is the mounting screws; the switch was supplied with 10mm long screws, but it really needs 16mm and these are elusive 5mm 0.9 pitch. I've managed to find some in the U.K and when they arrive, I should be good to go. However, I cannot seem to get the darn switch to fit correctly - it just won't close as did the old starter switch. As far as I can tell, the wiring is out of the way, but it is a very tight fit. Is there a special location spot? is there a mounting trick I don't know about?

Can one of our members from across the pond where these switches are commonplace give me some pointers?

Well, after a little research, it appears the this is a C95 Benly switch, which uses 5mm screws rather than the C77 Dream, which uses 6mm screws. Hope I can make it work.

Hi Seadog, I'm not an expert on this sort of thing but I wouldn't have thought there would have been any difference in the units to fit the 95 and 77 as the bars are the same. As you can see mine goes together fine are you sure your not trapping a wire against the bar. The problem with the screws is it possible to tap out to metric, I know it won't be original but you have to adapt.

Thank you, Casamere, your photo and knowing someone else has made this switch work is helpful and reassuring. As soon as I get the new screws, I'll give it another try. The starter switch wire is quite long and does take some care, but it's the bundle of wires that causes the biggest problem. I'll figure it all out.

I'm pretty sure that both the CA72 and Benly switches would originally have used 5mm x 0.9mm (JIS spec) screws.

These are still available if you you look for them, I've never seen a switch from that period with 6mm screws in from either model.

I would agree that I would not expect to see 6mm screws either - my standard starter switch from 1964 uses 5mm. My reference to 6mm screws was directly from the parts list, which specifies the screws to be part number 93500-06018, 6x18.

I was able to find the 5mm screws in the U.K. And they are in the mail.
